The RSL Literature Matters Awards seek to recognize and foster literary originality and brilliance. The Awards are granted to individual writers and other literary producers each year after an open request for proposals, recognizing their prior accomplishments and giving them financial support to carry out a planned new piece of writing or literary project.
Priority will be given to submissions that will connect literature with audiences or subjects outside its typical purview and/or encourage public discourse on the value of literature. The undertaking could take the form of a written work or works, a publishing, an occasion, or a production.
Regarding the Royal Society of Literature
King George IV established the Royal Society of Literature (RSL), an academic organization, in 1820 to “reward literary merit and excite literary talent.” About 600 Fellows of the RSL, a charity that speaks for literature in the UK, were chosen from among the best authors currently producing work in any genre. Aim and Benefits of RSL Literature Matters Awards
- A total of £20,000 is available – this will be split across a number of projects, which will be chosen by the judges. The winners will be announced in October 2023.
Requirements for RSL Literature Matters Awards Qualification
- Applicants must be permanent UK residents. They are unable to provide grants to British nationals who reside abroad.
- To demonstrate that the proposal is likely to be successful, the applicant should be a published author or other literary creator. They will consider applications from individuals or small groups of writers, but not from organizations, such as publishers, presses, registered charities, CICs, or businesses.
- A minimum age of 18 is required at the time of application.
- You must be in need of the financing to carry out the project and be able to demonstrate thi and how the money would be spent.
- Anyone who has received any Royal Society of Literature (RSL) Award or Prize (not including Fellowship) in the last two years may not enter.
- They welcome partnership with organisations but if the project is dependent on their involvement, you must have already confirmed with them that they are willing to collaborate with you.
- Projects will need to be safe, demonstrable and actionable, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. You must show that you have taken this into consideration in your application, ensuring the safety of all participants and feasibility of delivering the project should circumstances change.
- Current members of RSL staff and trustees are not eligible to apply.
