Award launched to recognise future seafood leaders



The Early Career Innovators Competition, launched as part of a broader drive to boost job opportunities in the salmon and seafood aquaculture sectors, has been announced by the Young Aquaculture Society (YAS), less than 6 months after the creation of the network.

The competition is free to join and open for members of YAS, an initiative started by Salmon Scotland’s technical and standards manager Andrew Richardson. Participants are asked to identify a challenge or problem and pitch their solution, which must be related to aquaculture – whether on a farm, at a hatchery, in a lab, or addressing a digital challenge.

“Early career professionals entering the field inherently bring fresh perspectives, making them well-positioned to generate impactful ideas. It’s truly exciting for us to introduce such a prize at this early stage of our organisation’s journey, and we are grateful to the Institute of Aquaculture and Aquaculture UK for sharing our mission,” said Richardson, in a press release announcing the competition.

The winner of the innovative competition will be featured at a special in-person event for sector professionals at Aquaculture UK, which is to be hosted by Salmon Scotland on 14 May 2024. Additionally, the winner will receive a complimentary stay on the evening of the event, while prizes will also be awarded for second and third place contestants.

“With over 700 remarkable young people working directly on our farms, it’s great to see a grassroots organisation supporting these rising stars by encouraging networking, socialising, and learning,” said Tavish Scott, chief executive at Salmon Scotland.

“I look forward to hearing about their ideas for propelling our already hugely successful sector forward,” he added.
